Paper walls

Paper Walls

Modular installation made out of recycled paper and old furniture.

Date

2019

Location

Waste Art project Estonian – Latvian cooperation initiative to raise awareness towards waste production and potential of reduce, re-use and recycle. Coordinated by Institute for Environmental Solution in Latvia.

The project reflects on the spaces we inhabit and the number of objects we use daily. It relates to the layering of time and memories and involves the overproduction of goods. Old furniture and wasted paper (newspapers and school books) become the primary materials for outdoor installations.
The modular sculptures relate to feelings of belonging, familiarity, and the affective importance we attach to the objects surrounding us daily. The spectator can experience the work from within, moving between the "walls" and inhabiting the space. Paper is a durable material that becomes incredibly long-lasting if layered. The shape of the work will change slowly if exposed to changing weather conditions. Still, it will never disappear completely, becoming a visual reminder of our daily consumption's environmental impact.
Waste Art 2019 brought together an international group of practitioners who are researching innovative insights into our environment through art. Art becomes a tool for envisioning new possibilities and starting a change.
